NAILS - Unsilent Death

I've been pretty pissed and restless the past few days, and my unquenchable need to knock things over has become more and more intense. So, I've been listening to a fuckload of NAILS, because they essentially are the soundtrack for angst. Loud as fuck, completely unintelligible, really intense, and drenched in distortion. Put this on your iPod, go outside and knock over a trash can.

TRACKS:

1. Conform
2. Scum Will Rise
3. Your God
4. Suffering Soul
5. Unsilent Death

Agalloch - The White (EP)

I think it's time for a little change of pace. I've mainly been posting hardcore/post-hardcore albums, with maybe one or two exceptions, but I've really been digging this EP, so even if it doesn't fit in with the theme of the blog, I want you to listen to hear it. Agalloch is an an American metal band, but this EP is very different stylistically from most of the things they've put out. It's acoustic-heavy, folk-driven, and VERY atmospheric. The musicianship on it is fantastic, and the mood the EP sets is extremely interesting. This EP is a very compelling listen, and you should give it a shot.

TRACKS:

1. The Isle Of Summer
2. Birch Black
3. Hollow Stone
4. Pantheist
5. Birch White
6. Sowilo Rune
7. Summerisle Reprise

And So I Watch You From Afar - And So I Watch You From Afar

It's always nice to find a post-rock/instrumental band that doesn't follow the traditional formula of "slow, melodic buildup to a bombastic climax and then a slow, melodic outro", so I was really pleased when I first heard this album. It's the self titled debut LP from the Irish band "And So I Watch You From Afar", and it's sheer unpredictability more than makes up for their kind of silly name. It's loud, technical, and you don't really have to set aside some time to listen to it, as is the case with a lot of post-rock bands. File under: "Epic battle soundtracks." Give it a listen.

TRACKS:

1. Set Guitars to Kill
2. A Little Bit of Solidarity Goes a Long Way
3. Clench Fists, Grit Teeth...GO!
4. I Capture Castles
5. Start a Band
6. Tip of the Hat, Punch in the Face
7. If it Ain't Broke, Break it
8. theseRIOTSareJUSTtheBEGINNING
9. Don't Waste Time Doing Things You Hate
10. The Voiceless
11. Eat the City, Eat it Whole

Desaparecidos - Read Music/Speak Spanish

I was directed to this album by a friend, and I've really, really been enjoying it. Although its the product of acoustic wonder-child Conor Oberst, this album wears it's post-hardcore influences on it's sleeve. While one would expect any album by Mr. Oberst to contain a dozen or so lovelorn songs of failed romances and treacherous wenches, "Read Music/Speak Spanish" sets it's sights directly on consumerist culture and the evils of American capitalism. Conor's voice is jagged and coarse, and he attacks each of the album's nine tracks (Highlights being "Man and Wife, The Former (Financial Planning)", "Mañana" and "Hole in One") with a relentless intensity only found sporadically on his Bright Eyes albums. It's an interesting, emotional, and absolutely blood-pumping listen, and I highly recommend it.

TRACKS:

1. Man and Wife, The Former (Financial Planning)

2. Mañana
3. Greater Omaha
4. Man and Wife, The Latter (Damaged Goods)
5. Mall of America
6. The Happiest Place on Earth
7. Survival of the Fittest/It's a Jungle Out There
8. $$$$
9. Hole in One

Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose

Because "White Crosses" was such a colossal disappointment on oh so many levels, this album has been seeming better and better with each listen. It's raw, powerful, intelligent and fiercely political all the way through, and over all, a classic punk album that hasn't lost any of it's luster over the years. Check this shit out.

TRACKS:

1. Pints of Guinness Make You Strong
2. The Politics of Starving
3. We Laugh at Danger (And Break All the Rules)
4. I Still Love You Julie
5. Scream It Until You're Coughing Up Blood
6. Jordan's 1st Choice
7. Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious...
8. Reinventing Axl Rose
9. Baby, I'm An Anarchist!
10. Walking Is Still Honest
11. 8 Full Hours Of Sleep

Fugazi - Steady Diet Of Nothing

While not quite as lauded as "The Argument" or "Repeater", "Steady Diet Of Nothing" remains a fantastic example of Fugazi's undeniable consistency when it comes to LPs. The album is poignant and challenging both lyrically and stylistically from the opening drones of "Exit Only" to Ian MacKaye's defiant howl of "We will not be beaten down" on the closer "KYEO". The album is also a great showcase of some of Joe Lally's greatest basswork with the band, as a sidenote. Give it a listen, you won't be disapointed.

TRACKS:

1. Exit Only
2. Reclamation
3. Nice New Outfit
4. Stacks
5. Latin Roots
6. Steady Diet
7. Long Division
8. Runaway Return
9. Polish
10. Dear Justice Letter
11. KYEO
